How has your development work influenced your final work?

My development has completely changed my final work, in comparison to my initial ideas. I have experimented with a range of ideas before arriving to my final piece. By experimenting so much, with so many different techniques and ideas, I have developed my ideas which has influenced my final work.

I attempted two different ideas which I hoped to make into a final animation, however it wasn't until the final editing stages that I decided to drop one of them, and stick with the other. One of my initial ideas was completely computer generated, whereas the otherone demonstrated a completly different approach, feeling initially quite handmade. Below is a sample of the idea which i decided to drop.

Both ideas were based around shapes, the computer generated animation used 2D images whereas the other used 3D shapes which I cut from card. I created the shapes for the computer generated animation using Illustrator. Below show's all of the original shapes that I created. I then imported these into Final Cut where I applied different transformations and effects.

I created a template, for my 3D shapes in Illustrator. I then printed this onto card and created the shapes for my animation.

Storyboard Development

I got my initial idea from Julien Valee. I continued to research his work and collaborations with other artists to enable me to develop my ideas further. I found a video from a collaboration with Eve Duhamel. It was produced by projecting light onto 3D Shapes. I had decided to create 3 30second animations. I could experiment with this idea, by creating the 'light projections' in after- effects. I also found this promotional poster, designed by Julien Vallee, i really like the contrast of the bold rigid 3D shapes against the forest background. For another one of my animations I will look at combining animation with live action recordings. I with either record this fotage myself, or aquire it from the net. I will animate my shapes on top of this background.
I also like this mix of paper, contrasted with computer generated effects. I hope to experiment further with this idea, using after effects.

I hope to create a non-narrative animation, which is abstract and with no particular meaning. I hope to experiment with a range of techniques and effects, rather than leading a well planned approach, as this will help me to create an animation that is more spontaneous.

I didn't create a storyboard as such, instead I produced images of how I hoped the final animation would look.

Aspects discussed with your tutor and feedback recieved

What ideas have you presented to your tutor and peers? How have your ideas and original plans changed in response to feedback and changes in circumstances? What comments did you receive?

My initial idea was a whiteboard animation in the style of Mulheres Barbados. I originally presented this idea, and an idea for a 2D paper animation, to the group. After discussion with them i decided to trial the whiteboard animation. After a few attempts I discovered that it would be really hard to create the desired effect that I had initially been hoping to achieve.
After discussion with my tutor, I decided to try a new idea based on an image that we found by Julien Vallee. After further research into his work, this really inspired me and I created many test and development pieces as a result. I decided to create three seperate animations, each showing different animation techniques, however all linking together in some way. Stuart Messinger suggested that I could use this idea however make it into one sequence, rather that three individual animations. Another idea was to use three seperate animations, however really mix them up into a single animation, using sequences from each. As I developed my animation further I realised that, mainly due to time avaliable, it would be more effective to produce a single animation. After shooting the initial animation using istop motion, Mr Haycocks suggested that I could use corel painter to give my animation a more personal touch, again I produced samples of this technique which i feel were very sucessful. I recieved feedback from a range of people which enabled me to develop my ideas and progress in my animation.

Developing Skills

I have experimented with a range of animation techniques in order to develop my skills including Flash, Pixilation, Hand-drawn, Stop-Frame and After-Effects. Below are some examples:

Flash:

Unfortunately, when this has been uploaded it hasn't come out very good quality. This is a hand drawn exersise that we completed with Stuart Messinger. We looked at Pushing and Pulling and exaggerated movements, we tried to look at body shapes to create a flow during the animation.

For the first sequence here I have done a person pushing a table, after shooting this we decided that it would be more effective if i changed it to a man on a skooter, which i feel works much better.
